Last week was packed with news from the renewable energy sector. IberBlue Wind will build the first cross-border offshore wind project in the Iberian Peninsula, Sinopec will develop China's first green hydrogen pipeline, and Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners has made its first biofuels move by acquiring the US biogas firm Purpose Energy. Meanwhile, Ford is going to invest $1.3bn to transform a Canadian plant into EV hub.

Tesla to build Megafactory in China to meet demand for Megapacks. The new factory will have a capacity of 10,000 Megapacks per year and will start production in Q2 2024. (Elektrek and 11 other sources)

Sense's energy monitors track electricity use and carbon intensity of the grid in real-time, helping customers schedule activities for times when the power mix is cleanest, potentially reducing energy waste and carbon emissions. Honeywell's LOHC enables long-distance clean hydrogen transportation using existing infrastructure. The LOHC solution chemically combines hydrogen gas into a liquid carrier, which can be transported in the same way as gasoline or similar hydrocarbons, and can help meet the growing demand for hydrogen across various industries. Bel Group partners with Climax Foods to create plant-based versions of its iconic cheese brands, starting with Mini Babybel, for launch in Europe and the US by the end of 2024. Gevo partners with LG Chem to develop bio-propylene for renewable chemicals. MIT engineers discover baking soda can reduce CO2 emissions from concrete production. Adding sodium bicarbonate during early stages of production can remove up to 15% of total CO2, and the resulting concrete sets more quickly and doubles mechanical performance. (Energy Post and 2 other sources)
Japan's Idemitsu Kosan has started a feasibility study for a clean hydrogen production facility capable of processing 200-300 tonnes of waste per day, in collaboration with US-based H-Cycle. The companies will use waste discharged in Japan as raw material to create high-valued clean hydrogen through an integrated gasification and plasma polishing process, which can be used as a raw material for synthetic fuels and industrial and transportation uses. Aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) could reduce heating and cooling energy consumption by 40% in the US, according to a study from Princeton University's Andlinger Center for Energy and Environment. The study found that ATES could store large amounts of energy for long periods of time, making urban energy infrastructure more resilient, and could be used alongside other technologies such as batteries to help end reliance on fossil fuel-derived backup power and enable a fully renewable grid. US plant-based sales surpass $8 billion in 2022, with 60% of US households purchasing plant-based alternatives, according to the Plant Based Foods Association's annual State of the Marketplace 2022 Summary Report. The report also revealed that the plant-based meat category is diversifying, with frozen meats making up 63% of sales, and consumers looking for lower prices and convenience.
