The Week in Cleantech: 28 May 2023
Last week witnessed a continued wave of new deals and partnerships being announced across cleantech sectors. Holcim placed record order of up to 1,000 Volvo electric trucks in Europe, Hyundai and LG formed a joint venture to produce 30 GWh of battery cells annually, and Natilus and ZeroAvia partnered to develop a zero-emission cargo aircraft. Meanwhile, a new investigation by Corporate Accountability found that Chevron's climate pledge relied on "junk" carbon offsets and "unviable" technologies.
Projects
Enel North America plans to build a $1 billion solar factory in Oklahoma, which could become one of the first to produce crystalline silicon solar cells in the US. The factory is expected to begin manufacturing up to 3 GW of panel capacity in 2025, rising to 6 GW in subsequent years, and is one of the largest solar manufacturing deals since the Inflation Reduction Act was passed. Blue Bird opens EV build-up center to produce 5,000 electric school buses annually. Diageo funds consortium to create circular economy for aluminium in the UK. Nike and Future Proof Shipping have unveiled the world's first hydrogen-powered inland container vessel, H2 Barge 1, which will transport Nike products in Europe. The Confederation of Paper Industries launches Papercycle, an online recyclability assessment and certification service for fibre-based packaging. Papercycle identifies whether materials can be recycled in the UK and which types of mills can reprocess them, and can conduct laboratory testing for more complex products or materials. Purdue's agrivoltaic structures optimize food production and maximize solar energy production, with a dual, off-axis rotation system and sensors. 4AIR launches blockchain-based registry to track sustainable aviation fuel sustainability attributes. The Assure SAF Registry provides transparency for SAF's feedstock, blend, and certification, simplifying inventory accounting and preventing double-counting of benefits. Recycling is still worth the effort despite local governments pulling back on curbside recycling services due to cost, according to a study by the University of Florida. The study found that recycling can help small municipalities reach their climate goals, and that kerb-side recycling provides communities with a return on investment similar to or better than climate change mitigation strategies such as voluntary green power purchases and transitioning to electric vehicles. Lab-grown meat's environmental impact could be worse than beef, according to a study by the University of California, Davis. The research found that the global warming potential of lab-based meat using purified media is four to 25 times greater than retail beef, although meat created using food-grade ingredients could be up to 80% less damaging than beef. Carbon pricing revenues hit record high of almost $100 billion in 2022, with carbon taxes and emissions trading systems (ETS) contributing to the increase, according to the World Bank's State and Trends in Carbon Pricing 2023 report. UK announces sweeping ban on most single-use plastics, including compostable and biodegradable items, affecting food and beverage manufacturers across the country.
